Spinalonga islet, a Venetian fortress

the last leper colony in Greece

The islet of Spinalonga is one of the most popular archaeological sites in Crete, as it is a well preserved Venetian fortress. It is located in the Gulf of Elounda.

It can be accessed from the ports of Aghios Nikolaos, Elounda and Plaka, the last one being the closest to the islet.

Between the years 1903 – 1957 the islet functioned as a leper colony, one of the last ones in Europe.

Nowadays it attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
